Tick things off as you pack. Nothing here is essential to buy — most of it you'll already have, and your club can help with the rest.

THE ONE THING THAT MATTERS

Essentials

Supportive, grippy trainers Court or tennis shoes are ideal. Avoid worn-down running shoes — the stopping and starting is hard on your ankles without support. Comfortable clothing Whatever you'd wear to the gym — leggings, shorts, joggers, a t-shirt or vest. Water bottle You'll be moving more than you expect.

DON'T STRESS ABOUT THIS ONE

The racket

A racket — borrowed or your own Most clubs have loaner rackets at the front desk, completely free — just ask. No need to buy one for your first session.

NICE TO HAVE

Small extras

Hair tie Cap or sunglasses If you're playing outdoors. Spare top or sweatband

BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE HOUSE

Quick checks

Check the club has loaner rackets If you don't have your own — most do, but it's a quick call or message to confirm. Confirm the session is beginner-friendly Look for "Intro," "Beginner," or ask directly. Know your arrival time Aim for 10-15 minutes early so you're not rushing your first game.
